Note: There is no difference in The List, no matter what price you purchase at. It is offered at various prices to allow for various levels of support to the pet food consumer advocacy work of Susan Thixton and TruthaboutPetFood.com.
This is a digital product delivered via email after purchase. Please read the detailed information below about The List before purchase – no refunds for digital products.
- The List is not an endorsement of any pet food. It is a ‘list’ of pet foods that I personally would trust to feed my own pets based on my knowledge of and experience in the pet food industry. And there is no guarantee that any of these pet foods won't be recalled in the future.
- No pet food company pays to be on The List. I do not receive money from pet food companies – Susan Thixton, TruthaboutPetFood.com and AssociationforTruthinPetFood.com is 100% consumer supported.
- Quality pet food is not cheap. Don’t expect these pet foods to be in the grocery store price range – they are not.
- You won’t find any of these pet foods in Big Box pet food or Big Box retail stores. These pet foods can be purchased from quality independent pet foods stores and directly from the manufacturer.
- Some of the pet foods on the 2017 List are available in Canada, even fewer are available in Europe.
- The List is the same no matter what price you purchase at.
The 2017 List includes 11 cat foods and 19 dog foods. There are only 2 kibble pet food options - the rest of the pet foods are raw, canned, cooked, or dehydrated.

I have grown to relie on this informational guide to take me thru the myriad of dog food products both raw, canned and dry. It has taken the worry out of figuring out what are good products for my dog/companions to consume. It has really opened my eyes to the way dog foods are made and where the materials are sourced from. It must have for anyone concerned with providing the best nutrition they can afford, whatever level that is, ultimately ending up with a healthier, happier pet. I never buy a new food product without first consulting this list. Thanks for all the hard work you do to inform us pup parents

I depend on Susan's yearly list to help me pick food for my dog Nikkie. I have been a member of Petsumer Report for over a decade and love being able to research foods. I am having to change my dog's food because she is gaining weight and I am trying one from her 2017 list. Thank you for all your hard work!!

This is a great list of pet food, specifically I like that it does give options for some kibble foods. I like that it introduces me to pet food suppliers that I was not aware of. I am especially happy to learn that the food I am feeding my pets were on the list. I only wish that there was more explanation as to why some food that was on the list last year is not on the list for 2017 because one of the brands I currently feed my cat. Regardless, it is well worth the money.

This list is invaluable for anyone who is concerned about what goes into their pet's food. The only list of its kind that I know of. Lists a couple of kibbles, dehydrated, and raw.

I have started making my own dog food, it is easy. good advice on line . search around. found the dinovite product line.

I'm a relative newbie at understanding
what quality food for my cat should consist of and I'm still learning. Gracie is my 10 year-old Russian Blue that is one of the loves of my life. For seven years I thought I was doing the right thing feeding her the expensive, supposedly "high-quality" kibble which the breeder had fed her. I mean, it was THE breeder and the kibble was/is one sold in veterinarians' offices! But, three years ago, Gracie began to throw up her food and definitely too often to my liking. I began to search the Internet for the best food to serve my Gracie girl. That's when I discovered Susan Thixton and the Truth About Pet Food website and her List of pet foods she would feel comfortable giving her pets. I "drank" in every tidbit of knowledge I could glean as if it was the fountain of youth. And in a way that's a perfect analogy. With her sharing her knowledge of the pet food industry and the pro and con ingredients and processes of preparing pet food, I feel she is helping me to share more years with my Gracie girl. Since I discovered Susan's List, I have only fed Gracie food found on the List. This list, this website has been an invaluable resource for me! If you have any hesitations about getting this List, do it! You will not regret it! It's a terrific wealth of information.

I bought the 2016 list and with all the work Susan did, I purchased the 2017 list. Thanks Sue. I too had a rottie who developed bone cancer at age 5. She was on a premium feed that had Ethoxyquin. before I was aware of its dangers back in the 80's. Followed by a rescue chi with seizures. I make my own food now with H.K. BASE MIX and alternate it with MY OLLIE. I'm glad I found you. My only regret is I didn't educate myself years ago.

Pet food manufacturers are good at marketing and promoting their products. Unfortunately reading the label doesn't let us really know what is going on behind the factory door! Thank you Susan for your dedication and work in sharing your knowledge and research with us frustrated pet owners. Your list helps us go beyond the pretty pictures and ingredients lists. I trust the detailed info you give about the companies, ingredients & sourcing and their mfg practices. This list gives pet parents comfort in making decisions regarding food for their animals.
