Note: There is no difference in The List, no matter what price you purchase at. It is offered at various prices to allow for various levels of support to the pet food consumer advocacy work of Susan Thixton and TruthaboutPetFood.com.
This is a digital product delivered via email after purchase. Please read the detailed information below about The List before purchase – no refunds for digital products.
- The List is not an endorsement of any pet food. It is a ‘list’ of pet foods that I personally would trust to feed my own pets based on my knowledge of and experience in the pet food industry. And there is no guarantee that any of these pet foods won't be recalled in the future.
- No pet food company pays to be on The List. I do not receive money from pet food companies – Susan Thixton, TruthaboutPetFood.com and AssociationforTruthinPetFood.com is 100% consumer supported.
- Quality pet food is not cheap. Don’t expect these pet foods to be in the grocery store price range – they are not.
- You won’t find any of these pet foods in Big Box pet food or Big Box retail stores. These pet foods can be purchased from quality independent pet foods stores and directly from the manufacturer.
- Some of the pet foods on the 2018 List are available in Canada, even fewer are available in Europe.
- The List is the same document no matter what price you purchase at.
The 2018 List includes 11 cat foods and 20 dog foods. There is only 1 kibble pet food option, 1 canned pet food option - the rest of the pet foods are raw, cooked, or freeze-dried/dehydrated.

I have been purchasing this list yearly to help me research the best foods available for my furry family members! It's nice to know there are people out there than care as much as I do when it comes to feeding my pups!
My Favorite List

This is my go to list prior to any new dog food purchase. Makes me confident that the product is made with all the requirements that I want in a food for my companions. Susan is awesome, thank you for all your hard work.
5 stars - Best!

I order this every year. I only want the best pet food, not pet feed, I can afford for my beloved furry family members to keep them happy & healthy. This report and corresponding websites are tops at informing me, the public, pet owners, about what is really in pet feed/food. Invaluable resource.

I wont buy a food for my dog unless it is listed on Susan's "approved" list. I do what research I can on my own, but Susan has the time and the ability to check resources I just dont have access to, she makes it much easier for me to pick quality foods for my doggie. I know many wish there was more kibble type foods, but the truth is most kibble foods are not that good. Most of the foods on the list are expensive, and to offset that expense I started cooking for my dog. Are there foods out there that are "good" and not on the list? probably. But why chance it?
Good guideline for purchasing dog food

I just wished you had more kibble option on the list. All the kibbles on the list has pea and legume in the ingredients and my dog get gas from eating those vegetables. Also I live in APO and the delivery takes weeks to get here so lot of cooked food brand on the list wasn't an option for us. It would come in more handy when we go back to States in couple years. Even though most brands on the list isn't accessible here in APO address and we mostly feed our dog "Nature's Logic" dry food I found your list interesting and helpful. I understand that you only listed brands that you would personally feed your dogs but I would appreciate if you had more kibble options and less expensive options for those who can only access feed grade food. I really love my dog and would do anything for my dog but with the current situations like living overseas base and being a busy mom I can't afford most of the diet on the list. It would be nice to have more list of brand that you would grade 4stars instead of 5. Thank you. I'm so grateful I ran across your website I have learned so much about dog food last couple months and it encouraged me to educate myself more. I'm sorry if it came off negative but I really do appreciate everything you do for us dog owners to keep our four legged family happy and healthy!

Ms. Susan does an excellent job of researching all types of foods and I value and trust her opinion.

It is difficult to review . I have 19 cats and 4 dogs (all spayed and neutered) The food reviewed are all excellent but I can not afford to feed all the animals. I might add one to the mixture as you suggested.
I was hoping you would have included a lower cost , lower quality food. I know you had newmans food listed last year. I use a grain free, low phosphorous, low carb diet for my animals. I am a petsumer member and use that ref. often when looking for food. I appreciate all you do for animals . Thank you
2018 LIST IS THE BEST SO FAR

I don't know how Susan does it every year, and this year's list is even better. So much vital information along with the pet food brands themselves. The list is logically organized and user-friendly. Easily worth the most one can afford, considering the health and lifespans of our animals are at stake. Feeding them inferior food can be avoided with the choices listed.
Well-Researched Ratings Cut Through Confusion

Sue's list explains it all and simplifies a dilemma for pet owners: What is safe and what is nutritious for dogs and cats?
The long answer is complex but the short list gives you the essence and tells you what to buy and where. If you stick with Sue Thixton and read her daily postings, you will understand how consumers are being duped by big government and big business. Why the difference between "feed grade" (for animals raised for slaughter) and "food grade" (for our pets who live with us like family) is not more widely known is a scandal.
